Last week, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) will discussed the removal of a hateful and derogatory term for Indigenous women from nearly 650 federal land units in an op-ed that ran in the Washington Post.

Sacheen Littlefeather (Apache and Yaqui), the Native actress who famously declined Marlon Brandon’s best actor Oscar in 1973, has died. She was 75. Her death came weeks after she received a long-overdue apology from the Academy Awards.

In a partnership between the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), the Department of the Interior is looking to bolster food sovereignty efforts across Indian Country with a new program: Indigenous Food Hubs. The initiative will bring Indigenous foods and nutritional education to BIE schools and detention centers.

A trio of U.S. Senators introduced legislation recently to support economic development in tribal communities – the Native American Tax Parity and Relief Act of 2022 – to remove tax burdens and ensure that tribal governments are treated similarly to state and local governments in the federal tax code.
