Good Morning, NUNAverse,

Last week, President Biden issued an official proclamation recognizing October 10, 2022 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, noting that “on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the sovereignty, resilience, and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world; and we recommit to upholding our solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations, strengthening our Nation-to-Nation ties.”

Time published an article detailing why life expectancy for American Indian and Alaska Native populations is lower than the general population, writing that “the roots of health disparities among Indigenous people are inextricably linked with the complex history of our nation’s mistreatment of Indigenous peoples.”

A new network television series that centers on the inner workings of a scrappy Alaskan newsroom tackling complex Indigenous storylines premiered on ABC last week. The scripted show, Alaska Daily, follows an award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind to join a daily newspaper in Anchorage and is assigned to work alongside a young Alaska Native reporter, played by First Nations citizen Grace Dove (Secwépemc), to report on cold cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in the state.

When a SpaceX capsule docked with the International Space Station last week to deliver the first Russian astronaut from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in 20 years, it also carried the first Native woman in space. Colonel Nicole Man (Wailacki of the Round Valley Indian Tribes) was among the four-person crew that included the Russian astronaut, a Japanese astronaut, and two astronauts from NASA.
